(C) You Can Add It Back

They often say to measure twice and cut once because you can take more off but you can’t add it back. Not true.

We finished the glue up of the blocks to locate and secure the panels that make the front, bottom, back, and top. Each block is made of two pieces of 3/4 plywood with 2 locating holes for 1/4″ dowels that locate into holes drilled in the side panels.

Once they were together we noticed that in some places the two pieces didn’t line up perfectly (we thought they would given the accuracy of the CNC) and we weren’t sure where exactly the outer surface should be for the panels to fit properly. Additionally, the original drawings were based on 0.710″ (18mm) material, but i didn’t like the material we bought and we used something else that was 0.75″. The place this made ths most difference was the back where the panels are supposed to be flush with the back edge of the side panels.

Sooooo….

We decided to fix both problems by milling some material off the faces of the blocks to make them true and then glue additional material onto the faces and remill them to exactly where they needed to be for the thicker material.

It worked beautifully and we now have perfectly registered surfaces to glue the panels too.
